.::The Beginning::.
In the beginning, there were many different species: centaurs, elves, dragons, unicorns, faeries... Then, the Great Catastrophe came. The world was pelted with asteroids and meteors. Volcanoes erupted everywhere, smothering the earth with the sulphuric smell of molten lava.
Only a few species survived, hiding and running from the horrible effects of the meteor storm. They came up from their hiding places, finding the world completely different than before. The land had split, creating many lands, but only one was suitable for life, its nature being somehow miraculously saved from the Great Catastrophe.
.::The Second Great Catastrophe::.
Lancer trotted through the village, tossing his mane in greeting to his older companions. He was headed to his favorite place, the only place where one could get some rest from the outside world.
He crept through an undergrowth of bushes, and emerged into the brilliantly lit hollow. It was surrounded by an unpenetrable circle of trees. Only he knew this place existed. He laid out, stretching out in the warm sun, the grass acting as a cushion to his strong, yet young, body. Suddenly, he heard his name wafting through the air. He jumped up, sliding back out through the entrance, and racing back towards the village.
He got home in time to see his mother, standing in front of their cave, calling his name.
"I'm here, Mother," he replied, trotting up and smiling at her.
"Lancer, quickly, son, come inside. There is something horrible about to happen, I must speak with you," his mother whispered urgently, pushing him into the cave.
She explained to him about a horrendous occurance, something that only happened once every few hundred years. The first occurance had created the world they lived in, making it the harsh land they must habitate. It was called the Great Catastrophe. Very few had survived, and those survivors were now long dead. Lancer shook with fear, huddling close to his mother, wondering why something so horrible could happen to his home.
"We must hide, my son," his mother urged him, "Grab anything of significance, and we must leave immediately." His mother picked up her bag and rushed out, leaving him to find something to bring with him. He looked around hurriedly, his thoughts too jumbled to be able to think of something he would want.
He glanced towards his bed, seeing his pet rock sitting calmly next to the hay of his sleeping area. He picked it up in his teeth and hurried out of his home.
When he exited the cave, he looked around, glancing at the sky. It had already begun to darken, the clouds boiling in the sky as if they were extremely angry with the world. He began to smell a horrible smell, like sulphur, creeping into his nostrils. He looked around, panicking, for his mother.
A lone unicorn galloped past him.
"Excuse me, sir," he grabbed the other unicorn, "Have you seen my mother?" He begged the older unicorn to answer him.
"Your mother is no concern of mine, young one," the older unicorn snapped, "Haven't you heard that the world is coming to an end?" He pushed past Lancer and galloped away.
Lancer's head dropped with sadness and loneliness. He began to cry, his body shaking with his fear. Suddenly, he raised his head, hearing a sound like pebbles being thrown at the ground. He looked up, seeing stones falling from the sky, fire burning on them. He began to panic again, trotting back and forth, rearing on his hind legs, lost for a reaction to this strange phenomenon.
Suddenly, a pegasus came falling from the sky, landing a few feet from Lancer's feet. He stood up, shaking himself, and trying to regain his balance. He looked over at Lancer and smiled groggily.
"Have you heard the world is ending?" the pegasus asked, a little punch-drunk from his fall, "Sure is a good ride." With that, he passed out. Lancer looked confusedly at the winged-horse, and then up at the sky.
The meters where beginning to get bigger, falling faster now. Lancer rushed over to the pegasus' side and lifted him from the ground, using his might to lift the horse with the magic of his horn. He began to run, the pegasus suspended in the air by his magic. He ran to his safe place, the only place he could think of.
A large meteor struck him in the back as he ran, causing Lancer to yelp. He ran harder, almost to the trees. He dove into the undergrowth, the branches tearing at his sides as if asking him to save them also. He shoved the pegasus through the opening and then clambered into the hollow behind him.
The canopy of the trees covered the two horse figures from the raining stones. As Lancer sat there, the blood that had conjured from the meteor striking him began to drain down his back, making him woozy from bloodloss. He began to black out. He finally passed out onto the soft cushion of grass, his pet rock rolling from his mouth...
.::A new beginning::.
Headache....pain....tired....
Lancer awoke groggily to something shoving him in his side. He opened his eyes and blinked a few times.
A pegasus stood at his side, nudging him as he lay on the ground. Trees stood all around, closing the two beings into a small hollow. The sun radiated down through the tops of the trees, illuminating the two white horse figures. Lancer sat up.
He shook his head, bringing his conscienceness back. He suddenly remembered what had happened.
"What happened to the world?!" he asked suddenly, jumping to his feet. The pegasus shook his head and shrugged.
"Who are you?" Lancer asked, just as suddenly as his first question had rolled off of his tongue.
"I am Lothen," the pegasus replied, smiling and bowing in greeting. Lancer returned the customary greeting.
"I am Lancer," he replied, nodding his head to finish the salute between the two beings, "Do you know what happened?" He watched the pegasus for a reaction.
"I just awoke and found you sleeping. I decided to wake you before leaving. I didn't want to strand you," Lothen explained, looking up through the tops of the trees. Lancer followed his gaze and then glanced behind him to where the entrance to the hollow was. He walked to the entrance, pushing his horn through the brush. He walked out of the trees and almost fainted.
He walked out onto a sandy beach, surrounded by a shining sea, lapping on the shore. Lothen emerged from the trees and gasped. Lancer looked around, seeing vegetation like he'd never seen before.
He had never heard the myth of Ellusian Isle, being too young to have heard the stories. He didn't know that after the First Great Catastrophe, a mysterious island had been the only landform to survive the horrendous effects of the lava and meteor storm. He also didn't know that this was the very isle he was standing on now.
Lothen laughed, shaking his head with disbelief.
"I've searched for this place my whole life," Lothen said, looking around, "I didn't believe it really existed." Lancer looked confusedly at his new friend. Lothen promptly described the myth of Ellusian Isle to Lancer, and Lancer nodded appreciatively.
"Ellusian Isle," Lancer commented under his breath. Lancer walked back into the hollow, laying down, the stress of the world ending and then restarting again, being too much for him. His natural healing abilities had regenerated his wound during his sleep, but the loss of blood was still draining on his energy. He laid his head down on the soft grass, and his chin hit something hard underneath the grass. He rummaged through the greenery, finally finding the object.
His pet rock was no longer just an ordinary rock. It shone with the light of the sun, a crystal reflecting the beauty of the world. It reflected the island, Ellusian Isle's magic being stored in the crystalline figure. Lancer looked at it amazed, not able to believe his eyes. He gazed at it so long that Lothen had already returned to the hollow to check on him.
Lancer raised the rock with his horn, showing it to his pegasus friend.
"Wow," commented Lothen, reaching out with a wing to touch the stone. Suddenly, a brilliant flash of light cracked in the hollow, sending both horse figures falling back against the ring of trees. The crystal landed in the middle of the hollow between them. A beautiful dove like figure emerged from the stone, wispy tendrils of smoke coiling out of the crystal. A beautiful horse materialized in the air above the rock, her white mane and tail flowing in her own personal breeze. Her black body reflected the bright sun pouring through the trees. She came to rest on her feet, blinking and looking at the two animals in the clearing.
"You have released me," she said, her voice echoing, embodying all time, "Thank you." She looked at Lancer, her beautiful brown eyes shimmering with her powerful magic.
"Who are you?" Lancer stammered, enraptured with her beauty. The black mare gazed at him and spoke:
"I am Ellusian. I am the goddess of life and nature. I protect this world from danger. When the catastrophes happen, I am granted the power to renew the world, beginning it over with my island. The survivors come here, to be nutured and cared for, in hopes that the catastrophes will never happen again. But, sadly, some always leave the island, wanting to expand the world. They become corrupt, and the world is destined to be destroyed again."
She sighed, her deep, wise eyes filling with the tears of thousands of eternities. She looked up, shaking the tears from her face. They fell to the ground like crystals, rainbows shining from them until they splashed on the grass.
Lancer and Lothen gulped simulatneously. Lancer was the first to recover.
"So, we're in the new world?" Lancer asked, watching Ellusian still, captivated by her immortal beauty.
"Yes..." she said, smiling slightly and looking at the pegasus and unicorn, "Welcome to Ellusian Isle."
